What Are High Security Locks?
Most of us have a Euro Cylinder lock fitted to our external doors but did you know that some are not as burglar resistant as others? That’s why it’s incredibly important to have the right types fitted.
A BSI certified euro cylinder lock is one that is rigorously tested and certified to be highly resistant against being picked or forced apart.
Typical High Security Lock Features Include:
Anti-Snap – Locks with Anti-Snap features have weak points designed to fail before the lock cylinder does. This means the lock cannot be snapped in half and extracted.
Anti-Bump – When a lock is bumped the pins inside are dislodged by repetitive impact. High Security Locks are more resistant to this style of manipulation.
Anti-Drill – Hardened components and designs that prevent drill bits from defeating a lock.
Kite Mark – If a burglar sees a lock has a Kite Mark they know it’s less likely to be easy to defeat.

British Standard Locks And Your Insurance
It is often the case that most people look for the cheapest insurance they can find but you should be careful of what details you put in to get a cheaper policy. Do not claim you have Kite Mark certified locks if you don’t because it may invalidate your claim in the event you have a burglary.
Always ensure when filling out the insurance details you put in the correct information as on different insurance providers the questions can be different. If in doubt always ask a locksmith who will be able to advise you of the correct answers and determine if you do indeed have certified locks.

How A BS3621 Lock Affects Insurance
By examining a lock from the outside, you cannot tell how secure it is. Therefore, a lock must be assessed internally by the British Standards Institute to determine if it is produced to BS3621. A lock that is submitted for BSI testing will be tested for wear over time and will be thoroughly tested to ensure it stands up to being picked or defeated. Locks that have passed the rigorous testing and standards laid down in BS3621 will be certified and allowed to show a Kite Mark on the lock itself and any packaging it comes in. Most insurance providers now specify your locks should be certified to BS3621 and carry a Kite Mark for you to be able to get cover from them. A lock that is certified to BS3621 will also show the standards it has passed within the overall BS3621 standard.
The Different BSI Standards
There are two other main BSI standards for locks other than being certified with a BS3621 Kite Mark, these being BS8621 and BS10621. BS3261 is the most common on domestic and residential locks.
BS3621 – This standard is for Mortice and Cylinder locks where a key can be used in both sides of the lock. Usually found on back doors. This lock must be secure with the key removed and not able to be operated by someone reaching through a broken pane or letterbox.
BS8621 – This standard is for thumb turn lock types, opened from the outside by a key but can be opened from the inside using a thumb turn. Most often found in bedsits and flats. These locks are fitted to allow emergency egress without a key.
BS10621 – This standard is relevant to locks that can only be locked from the outside with a key. The lock can be opened from the inside without a key using a lever unless the lock has been prevented from being turned by using a key from the outside. These are generally fitted to front doors.
